Hadrian's Wall with Kids: The Best Family Walks, Tips & Things to Do

When people think about walking Hadrian's Wall, they often picture long days, tired legs and mile after mile of walking.


The best family adventures aren't about how many miles you cover. They're about climbing hills, exploring Roman ruins, spotting sheep, listening for birds and finishing the day with an ice cream or slice of cake.


Hadrian's Wall is one of Britain's best places for a family adventure and a wonderful place to spark a child's imagination. Around every corner there's something new to discover.


Whether you're travelling with toddlers, primary-aged children or teenagers, there's a way to make Hadrian's Wall an adventure they'll remember.


Make It a Game

Children love a challenge.

Instead of counting miles, see who can spot:

  • A Roman milecastle

  • A turret

  • A sheep

  • A rabbit

  • A kite

  • A Roman arch

  • A section where you can walk on top of Hadrian's Wall

Dress Like a Roman

History comes alive when children can get hands-on.

Several museums along Hadrian's Wall let children dress up as Roman soldiers, handle replica artefacts and discover what life on the frontier was really like.

Let's be honest. Tweens and teenagers can be a tougher audience.

To them, one Roman wall can start to look remarkably like the next...

...followed shortly by:

"How much further?"

Or:

"Is there any Wi-Fi?"

The secret isn't trying to make them love Roman history. It's giving them a reason to stay engaged.


Let Them Lead

Download the GPX route before you set off and put your teens in charge of navigating. OS Maps is a great app. It is the official map of Great Britain and includes very detailed maps that include landmarks, boundaries, buildings, footpaths and terrain. It is fairly inexpensive and allows you to easily download routes and use them offline, or create your own.


Following the route, spotting boundary lines and landmarks and working out which way the trail heads next adds another dimension to the walk and keeps everyone involved.


Turn Their Phone into an Adventure Tool

Rather than fighting screen time, use it.

Challenge them to:

  • Identify bird songs using Merlin Bird ID. It can be used for free.

  • Spot different varieties of wildflowers and trees using Google Lens. Take a photo and use the app to help you identify the different species you see along the walk.

  • Capture the walk in video clips and photos and make it into a highlight reel or turn it into a movie trailer.

Their phone suddenly becomes part of the adventure instead of a distraction.


Create a Photo Challenge

Who can photograph:

  • The funniest sheep?

  • The most dramatic stretch of Hadrian's Wall?

  • The best landscape photo?

  • The best action shot?

  • The ultimate Instagram-worthy landscape?

  • The best candid shot?

  • The most creative photo?


You'll head home with far better memories than a collection of selfies.

Go Geocaching

There are dozens of geocaches hidden along Hadrian's Wall.

Download the Geocaching app before your visit and turn your walk into a treasure hunt. Take a trinket or toy (SWAG) with you to exchange.


Give Everyone a Choice

Let each member of the family choose one stop during the day.


It might be the café, the picnic spot, the Roman fort or the ice cream stop.

Sometimes that's all it takes to turn a walk into an adventure.


My Favourite Family Walks


Steel Rigg to Sycamore Gap

Distance: Around 2 miles

One of the most spectacular short walks on Hadrian's Wall.

Walk out on the lower path towards Sycamore Gap before returning along the higher path beside Hadrian's Wall. You'll enjoy two completely different perspectives without taking on a long or demanding walk. Park at either Steel Rigg car park or The Sill (adding around an extra mile to the walk). Afterwards, enjoy a well-earned break at The Sill's café, or head east along the Military Road to Chollerford for lunch at the Riverside Kitchen. They have the most amazing homemade bakes and cakes.


Housesteads Roman Fort to Milecastle 37

Distance: Around 2 miles

If I had to recommend just one family walk on Hadrian's Wall, this would be it.

Along the way you can:

  • Walk on Hadrian's Wall.

  • Look through a surviving Roman arch.

  • Visit one of Britain's best-preserved Roman forts.

  • Explore the museum.

  • Dress up as a Roman soldier.

  • Handle replica artefacts.


Return on the lower path to complete an easy circular walk. There is currently (summer 2026) a coffee van, but no café at Housesteads. I recommend either heading to The Sill afterwards, where you'll find a great café, family-friendly activities during the summer holidays and plenty of space for children to explore, including a small playground. The Twice Brewed Inn is right next door if you're looking for a meal, while the Twice Brewed Tap Room is a great option for the grown-ups.


Cawfields Quarry

Distance: Around 2 miles

Perfect for younger families.

Follow the dramatic high path before returning beside the Vallum on the lower route.

There are picnic benches overlooking the quarry, making it a brilliant lunch stop. If you're lucky, the All Stacks coffee van will be there too—coffee for the grown-ups and cake for everyone else. Also, the Milecastle Inn is at the end of the road.

A Few Practical Tips

Walking Hadrian's Wall with kids is easier with a little planning. Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your day:


  • Pack more snacks than you think you'll need.

  • Bring layers. The weather changes quickly.

  • Binoculars make wildlife spotting much more fun.

  • Scout out the nearest cafés and ice cream stops before setting out.

  • Bring a first aid kit, wet wipes and extra resealable bags.

  • Download a map of the area in case you need to shorten your walk.

  • Keep a spare set of socks in your backpack

  • Take your time.
