Frequently asked questions
A few of the mostly common queries about this experience
Do I have to walk the full 84 miles? No. For 2027, there are two ways to experience Hadrian’s Wall. You can walk the complete Hadrian’s Wall Path over six days, or choose shorter guided walks with more time to explore the history, landscapes and places around the Wall. Both groups stay, eat and travel together and come back together at the end of each day.
How difficult is the full Hadrian’s Wall walk? The full route covers approximately 84 miles over six walking days, generally around 13–16 miles each day. Expect long days on your feet, uneven ground, hills, steps, mud and changing weather. The central section of Hadrian’s Wall is particularly hilly. You don’t need to be an elite walker, but you should arrive comfortable walking for several hours and completing consecutive long-distance days. We’ll help you prepare with training and kit guidance before your trip.
How much walking is involved in the shorter option? The shorter itinerary is designed for women who want to experience Hadrian’s Wall without walking 13–16 miles every day. Distances will vary, with shorter guided walks (3-6 miles) combined with visits to Roman sites, museums and historic towns.
Can I have my own room? Yes. Single rooms are available, subject to availability. Shared rooms are also available for women travelling together or happy to share.
Where will we stay? With 9–14 women, we’re planning to stay together in a private castle. With 6–8 women, we’ll stay at a private lodge with a hot tub. Whichever accommodation we use, the Women Walk the Wall experience remains the same. If we do not stay in the castle, there will be a partial refund of £300 per person.
What age is this trip suitable for? Rather than setting an age limit, we focus on your walking ability, health and confidence on uneven terrain. If you’re unsure whether the trip is right for you, get in touch and we can talk it through. Our oldest guest to date was 78.
Are payment plans available? Yes. Interest-free payment plans are available to help spread the cost of your holiday. The number of instalments available will depend on when you book, and your final balance must be paid three months before departure. A £100 deposit secures your place, and we’ll arrange a payment schedule within the remaining time before the trip.
What if I need to cancel? We understand that plans can change. Because Women Walk the Wall is a small-group experience, cancellation charges increase as the trip gets closer: More than 6 months before departure: £100 deposit 3–6 months before departure: 50% of the total holiday price Less than 3 months before departure: 100% of the total holiday price Cancellation charges are based on the total holiday price, regardless of whether you are paying in full or using a payment plan. If you can no longer attend, you may transfer your place to another woman for a £100 administration fee. If we are able to fill your place, we may be able to reduce your cancellation charge, taking into account any costs already incurred and a £100 administration fee. We strongly recommend taking out comprehensive travel insurance as soon as you book.
What happens if the weather is bad? We walk in typical Northumberland weather, which can mean sunshine, wind and rain in the same day. Your guides will continually assess the weather, trail conditions and needs of the group. Routes or plans may occasionally be adapted when necessary for comfort or safety.
What happens if I can’t complete a day’s walk? You won’t be left stranded on the Wall. We have daily transport and support in place, and your guides will work with you if you’re struggling, injured or simply having a difficult day. Exactly what is possible will depend on your location and the day’s route, but looking after the group is a fundamental part of what we do.
I’m nervous about joining on my own. Is that unusual? Not at all. Women Walk the Wall is particularly suited to solo travellers because so much of the week is shared. You’ll walk, travel and eat together, so there are plenty of opportunities to get to know everyone naturally.
Is travel insurance required? We strongly recommend taking out comprehensive travel insurance that covers walking activities, cancellation, medical treatment and personal belongings. It’s best to arrange your insurance as soon as you book so you’re covered if something unexpected prevents you from travelling.
How do I reserve my place? A £100 deposit secures your place for Women Walk the Wall 2027. Once you’ve booked, we’ll be in touch about your room preference, payment plan and everything you need to start preparing.
What do I need to bring? You’ll need comfortable, well-tested walking footwear, waterproofs, layers suitable for changing weather, a small daypack and a reusable water bottle. Before your trip, we’ll send you a full kit list and preparation guide, so you’ll know exactly what to bring and what you can leave at home. Walking poles are available if you’d like to use them. You don’t need to buy lots of expensive specialist equipment.
Do you cater for allergies and dietary requirements? Yes. We can cater for most allergies and dietary requirements with advance notice. We’ll ask about dietary requirements before your trip and pass this information to our accommodation and catering partners. If you have a severe allergy or specific dietary requirement, please let us know before booking so we can discuss your needs and make sure the arrangements are suitable for you.
How do I get to the accommodation? We’ll send you detailed arrival and departure information before your trip, including the nearest train station, bus terminal and airport. We’ll also arrange pick-ups from those arrival points, making your journey to the accommodation as straightforward as possible.
How do I prepare to walk 84 miles? Preparing to walk 84 miles is all about building up gradually and knowing what to expect before you arrive. Our online training programme covers all the key aspects of preparation, from training, kit and footwear to terrain, nutrition and what to expect on the trail. We can also provide a structured 12-week or 16-week training plan to help you build your walking distance, strength and confidence before your trip.
