If you've been browsing the internet for a walking holiday along Hadrian's Wall, you might have noticed that they all seem to follow a pretty standard pattern. Usually, they're around five to nine days long, and they take you from one coast to the other, with a different place to stay each night, and then they just kind of repeat that same formula over and over again.
How Do I Walk Hadrian's Wall? Let Me Count the Ways.
There are many ways to explore Hadrian's Wall, and each one offers a unique perspective on this ancient structure.
When it comes to planning a trip, everyone's got their own idea of what makes a perfect journey. For some, it's all about tackling the National Trail from one end to the other, coast to coast, and getting that sense of accomplishment. Others might prefer to take it easy, spending a long weekend soaking up the drama of the central section, or really digging into the Roman history that's on offer. Then there are those who want to build their whole holiday around the simple pleasures in life: amazing food, cosy pubs, and places to stay that you'll always remember.
Whether you've got two days or three weeks, there's a Hadrian's Wall holiday that's right for you.

Walking 15 miles a day can be a thrilling idea for some, while for others, it's a daunting task - and that's perfectly okay. The beauty of Hadrian's Wall lies in its flexibility, allowing you to create your own adventure. You can take on a small section or the entire trail, or simply pick and choose the parts that interest you the most. Whether you're looking for a leisurely stroll or a challenging hike, Hadrian's Wall has something to offer. You can walk as much or as little as you like, making it an ideal destination for anyone who wants to experience the thrill of this historic landmark at their own pace.
Here are a few ideas to get you thinking...
The Short Break (2-3 Days)
Ideal for those with limited time or who just want to experience the highlights of the Wall.
Why not pick a spot to call your own, like Hexham or Once Brewed, and take a couple of days to really get to know the amazing central part of the area. The AD122 bus runs year-round and takes you from Hexham to Haltwhistle and Walltown, so no car is needed. You could walk from Walltown to Steel Rigg and Chollerford to Housesteads. You can do a shorter walk from Housesteads to Once Brewed, which is just fantastic, and then catch the AD122 to Vindolanda, which is one of our favourite Roman museums with free daily tours and an active dig where you can chat to archaeologists and ask them about their latest finds. There are other great Roman forts to explore too, and after all that, you can finish off the day with a nice meal at a proper pub, rather than just flopping into bed exhausted from walking 18 miles. It's a much more relaxed way to see the sights, and you'll really get to appreciate the beauty of the place.
You can take in some of the Wall's most amazing views without having to hurry.
The Short Break (4-5 Days)
A favourite for many visitors.

Instead of trying to cover the entire route, pick the parts that really catch your eye. You could mix and match the exciting central hills with the calm and serene western landscape around Lanercost, or the lively finish into Newcastle. This way, you get to experience the best of both worlds.
When you're walking between 6 to 10 miles every day, you've got lots of time to do more than just put one foot in front of the other. You can stop and take some amazing photos, visit museums, and check out archaeological sites - all the things that make a trip really special. It's not just about getting from point A to point B, it's about enjoying the whole journey and taking it all in.
The Classic Coast-to-Coast (6-9 Days)
This is the itinerary most people picture when they imagine walking Hadrian's Wall.
You'll usually cover around 10 to 15 miles each day, walking from Bowness-on-Solway to Wallsend, or the other way around, with just a daypack on your back, assuming you've set up luggage transfers.
It's a wonderful achievement and a fantastic way to experience the changing landscapes, from the Solway marshes to the dramatic Whin Sill crags and the River Tyne.
The Slow Adventure (10-14 Days)
Personally, I think this is one of the best ways to experience Hadrian's Wall.
Take it easy and walk shorter distances, like 5 to 8 miles a day. You could spend an afternoon checking out Chesters Roman Fort; it's really interesting. Join a guided tour of Housesteads; you'll learn a lot. Also, visit Vindolanda; our favourite fort and museum. It's definitely worth exploring. When you're in Hexham, browse around the independent shops; they're great. Take your time over lunch, try some local beer, and talk to the people who live and work along the way.
The Wall becomes much more than a long-distance trail. It becomes a holiday.
The Deep Dive (2-3 Weeks)
If you're really into Roman history, it could be the main focus of your trip.
Use Hadrian's Wall as a base to explore Northumberland and Cumbria. Visit every major Roman fort and museum, discover hidden stretches of the frontier, spend a day at Bamburgh Castle, wander the streets of Hexham, take a boat trip to the Farne Islands or enjoy an evening of stargazing in Northumberland International Dark Sky Park.
You'll head back home with memories of more than just the wall - you'll have experienced the amazing area that's all around it too.
For Foodies, Beer Lovers and Boutique Stay Seekers
Not every Hadrian's Wall holiday has to be about covering the biggest distance.
Perhaps your perfect adventure is built around fantastic food, brilliant pubs and memorable places to stay. Walk a few miles, enjoy a leisurely lunch, sample local ales from Northumberland breweries, then settle in for the evening at a cosy country inn, a boutique hotel, a historic castle, or a shepherd's hut beneath the stars.

Maybe you're thinking of trying out that fancy restaurant you've been hearing about, the one with the Michelin star. Or perhaps a relaxing afternoon tea in a beautiful country house hotel is more your style. You might even be looking for a place to stay that has a hot tub, so you can unwind after a long day of hiking or exploring. Whatever it is, you're probably looking for something special, something that will make your trip really memorable.
A trip to Hadrian's Wall should be just as special when you're relaxing as it is when you're out exploring.
Your Hadrian's Wall Walking Holiday
Some people want to complete the National Trail. Others want to visit every Roman fort using their English Heritage or National Trust memberships. Some plan each day around the next great pub. Others are photographers, birdwatchers, runners, jogglers (yes, it's a thing) or simply people who love being outdoors.

Your holiday doesn't have to look like anyone else's.
You might want to think about having your luggage moved for you, so you only have to carry a small bag with you each day. Or maybe you'd prefer to stay in each place for a couple of nights, instead of moving to a new hotel every day. Some people like to take shorter walks and use taxis to get between sections, while others prefer to have a guide with them for some days and go it alone on others. You could also build in some extra time to explore the charming market towns and stunning coastline of Northumberland as you make your way along.
There isn't a correct way to walk Hadrian's Wall. There is only the way that's right for you.

So, how will you walk Hadrian's Wall?
I like to walk at my ease, and stop when I like. A wandering life is what I want. To walk through a beautiful country in fine weather, without being obliged to hurry, with a pleasant prospect at the end, is of all kinds of life, the one best suited to my taste —Rousseau
